Oncology- the Branch that gives the definition of Cancer Illness

Research objective:

The research main goal is to work with cancer cells to in order to determine a better treatment that can cure cancer. The cancer statics in the year 2013 is that more than 1,660,290 new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2013, and in 2013 about 580,350 Americans die of cancer, almost 1,600 people a day. Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting that is only one survival of every four death people of cancer. The gap in cancer is that scientists have not found a treatment that can stop the abnormal cells.

ASR Background information:

My name is Florangel Garcia, I am a sophomore at Manhattan Center for Science and Math. My ethnicity is Hispanic, I was born in Moca, Dominican Republic. My research motivation is that cancer is a disease that if you fight against it you can win, because you are the warrior.

College Major: Bio-chemistry

The new updates for my area of research are:

A new cancer research discover of the American Institute Cancer Research that by eating nuts and including them in your diet you can get a lower risk of not getting cancer. In this studies men and women were ask during the time of two to  four year for long in those time do they eat nuts , and it was discover if you eaten nuts five times in week you can have 11 percent less of the getting cancer.

Research motivation:

When I was Younger I always like to see how deep I could study science, them I applied  for the ASR program, last year because I was engage in getting the cure for Cancer, by to creating this treatment it can help those kids and people that are fighting the big war. I decide more than any topic of science to study cancer, because  the years are  pass by more and more people are losing the war but my hope is study more in detail in order for myself to help people in around the world.

Research Description:

The branch of science that I am going to be studying is Oncology, this area of science studies cancer. I decide to study cancer because I want to give a hope to those that are fighting the big war.

Findings of Oncology:

According  to the book of “Definition Guide to Cancer by Lise Alschuler,ND,and Karolyn A. Gazella”( Second Edition).Cancer is an illness that can have more than 200 variations.Also when a person is declared with Cancer that process of carcinogenesis has started which means “the birth of cancer”. The five major types of cancer are:

Carcinomas :is a type of Cancer that can affect any organ in the human body, this Cancer is common. Carcinomas are form in the epithelial cells and travel in your bloodstream, This includes Cavity, Skin, Etc.

Leukemia: this type of cancer do not form solid tumors, this Cancer forms in blood and bone marrow, The white blood cells are abnormal and replaced the healthy white blood cells and travel through the bloodstream.

Myelomas: this type of cancer form tumors in the plasma cells , this type of cancer rare but is rising up every day.

Lymphomas: this type of cancer form lymph nodes,are solid tumors form by the abnormal of white cells ,this type of cancer is most common in United States.

Sarcomas:  this type of cancer is form by connective tissues ( bone and Muscle), solid tumors, this type of cancer is the most rare because it can surround organs.


“Oncology: Leukemia”

Oncology is an area of science that studies cancer. My goal is to study leukemia in order to develop a better treatment process. I will be analyzing genes in order to find a chemical treatment for leukemia which is a type of cancer that occurs when white blood cells get mutated and the DNA changes. There are four types of leukemia: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, and chronic lymphoblastic leukemia. According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, leukemia causes about 9.4% of cancer deaths per year. This topic is significant because a treatment that is applicable to everyone has not yet been found.
